Notes From the Judges
#1: RECEIVER COFFEE: This coffee was by far the best of the lot in our opinion. The clean cup, bright acidity, flavors of berries and jam all came through in the cup. The roast at a light/medium was perfect for the selection and the finish left you wanting more.
#2: GROS MORNE COFFEE ROASTERS: Tuckamore was a medium dark roast, very aromatic, full body and a deep rich flavor. The finish was creamy and the execution of the roast was very well done.
#3: RAMPAGE COFFEE & SECOND CUP COFFEE: Both of these coffees were very different but from a tasting perspective they fell into about the same category "good, not great". Rampage was a dark roast and the body was full and bold. It had some sharp edges and if anything slightly to the bitter side. Second Cup was a medium roast and while the flavors were pleasing (sweet) to the palate it left the tasters wanting more. It was almost too subtle and they may have been able to show off the greens a little more with just a slightly lighter roast to enhance the acidity. Regardless both made a good cup and would make a good every day coffee choice.
#4: TRINITY COFFEE COMPANY: The tasters were almost unanimous about this coffee. The roast was medium and the aroma, body and flavor profiles were non- memorable. It was just a cup of coffee with nothing to distinguish it from any other.
#5: COFFEE MERCHANT: These two coffees from this roaster brought up the rear and by a wide margin. The coffee to our tasters lacked the fresh quality you would look for in a premium coffee. The flavors were flat, undistinguishable, and the aftertaste left you not wanting another sip.
PLEASE understand we appreciate that your tastes may well differ from that of the tasters that participated in this event. Our goal is not to dissuade you from trying all the coffee out there but be aware that not every cup is a great cup. Be adventurous and drink more coffee.
